Letter from SASC President
"Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For indeed that's all who ever have" - Margaret Mead
Share A Smile Chicago is a non-profit 501 C-3 organization catering to the needs of the elderly both here and overseas, primarily in India. Our small team strongly affirms our mission statement: ‘no cause is too small, and no gesture of giving, unworthy’. And we strive to make the lives of the elderly, just a little more comfortable! Our Organization is run by a team of strong, dedicated, hardworking women and entirely volunteer based! Since our inception about 10 years ago, our team of members and volunteers has grown tremendously! We now have three chapters in the Chicago area and many endeavors to support! We have over the years, helped many senior causes in the USA and in India. Our primary beneficiary is a senior home on the outskirts of Delhi called Sukhdham. Most of the proceeds from our annual fundraiser go towards food, lodging and medical care for seniors at this facility. We have been the primary supporter for Sukhdham. We have also partnered with Barrington Council of Aging (BACOA) and the Dupage Senior Citizen Council and their ‘Meals on Wheels’ program to deliver hot meals to the disabled elderly in the greater Chicago area. We also help with care and well-being of seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia at Autumn Leaves, in South Barrington.
In addition to these; we have sent donations to Swami Ramanand Shastri home for seniors in Maharashtra; Sankara Eye Foundation, UNICEF, Aids Orphans of Africa, EduCare and homeless shelters in Chicago. We have also provided help and donations to Schaumburg Barn; organized relief for Chennai and Kerala flood victims, primarily senior centers in both these states; and partnered with Fort Bend Seniors TX, during hurricane Harvey to help with their Meals on Wheels program. We have helped with langar and coat drive at the Gurudwara in Palatine, IL, and have also sponsored a medical camps both at the Gurudwara and the Hindu Temple in Bloomingdale, IL.
In 2018, we partnered with Combat Blindness of Madison, Wisconsin to help fund cataract surgeries for seniors who cannot afford them.
We also run a very successful Support a Senior program; where for an amount of $600 one can provide meals, toiletries and medical costs for a senior at Sukhdham for an entire year! We are proud to say that Sukhdham has moved to a bigger and better facility recently, and so will be needing your support even more.
But charity begins at home! And our most fulfilling endeavor, are the monthly lunches, picnics and outings we plan for the seniors of our community. In 2018 we organized our first Diwali workshop for seniors of our community. The workshop was conducted over three weeks; with activities ranging from Zumba Gold to Yoga to Painting and culminating in an all chapter seniors lunch at Viceroy of India, where our seniors got to mingle, celebrate, dance, perform and make new friends!
And from our seniors, we have learnt, that while there maybe some limitations and challenges….these senior years can be some of the most rewarding and fulfilling. It is strength and survivorship and triumph over any trials! And to enjoy each day to its fullest.
I am truly honored to be serving as president of this wonderful organization and working with a great team of dedicated women! And I am very grateful to all our supporters and their generosity for allowing us to continue our work
